The Weight of a Thousand Corrections: How Feedback in Childhood Shapes the Careers Neurodivergent Adults Choose

Childhood feedback can shape how neurodivergent children view failure, influencing confidence, persistence and the careers they ultimately choose.

A life is built from a long sequence of small verdicts. Good job. Try again. Not quite. Well done. Most of us don’t remember any single one of them. But we carry the pattern. That is, the accumulated sense of where we’re capable and where we’re not, into every major decision we make as adults, including the career we end up in.

For neurodivergent children, that pattern is written differently. Long before a diagnosis is understood, sometimes long before there is a diagnosis at all, many autistic and ADHD children accumulate a disproportionate share of correction: from teachers managing a classroom, from parents trying to keep everyone on schedule, from peers who notice a child is “different” before anyone can explain why. The question worth asking is not just how did that feel, it’s where did it take them. Did a childhood shaped by more failure than a neurotypical peer’s quietly steer some children away from the careers and paths they might otherwise have chosen?

The research suggests: yes, probably, and the mechanism is more specific, and more addressable, than “low self-esteem.”

A word of caution on the numbers

You’ve likely seen the claim that a child with ADHD receives 20,000 more critical comments than a neurotypical child by around age ten or twelve. It shows up in books, talks, and Instagram infographics, almost always stated as established fact.

It isn’t. The figure traces back to a thought experiment published by child psychiatrist Michael Jellinek in a non-peer-reviewed piece in 2010, in which he imagined a hyperactive child being corrected roughly three times an hour at school and multiplied that out. No study collected the data. No comparison group of neurotypical children was measured against it.

That doesn’t mean the underlying idea is wrong, as it almost certainly isn’t. It means we should reach for the research that does hold up, rather than a number that sounds precise but was never measured. And there’s plenty of it.

The real mechanism: how a child explains their own failure

The strongest and longest-standing body of evidence here doesn’t come from ADHD or autism research specifically. It comes from decades of work on attribution theory and learned helplessness in children with learning disabilities, going back to Carol Dweck’s foundational work in the 1970s and continuing through to today.

The pattern researchers keep finding is remarkably consistent. Children with learning disabilities report lower self-concepts specifically on items related to academic achievement, and are rated by their own teachers as less persistent than their typically-achieving classmates. More tellingly, they tend to hold more “stable” attributions for failure – meaning that when something goes wrong, they’re more likely to believe it happened because of who they are, and that it will keep happening, rather than believing it was situational or fixable.

That belief is the turning point in the whole story. Continual exposure to failure has been shown to produce learned helplessness. This is withdrawal, a reluctance to approach new tasks, and a drop in persistence. Even in situations where they’re good at something, these children hold back, because they’ve learned that trying hard doesn’t always help. Research supports this by finding that when kids believe their failures are due to something fixed about them, they start to feel like nothing they do matters. And that feeling alone can hurt their performance later, even when they’re fully capable.

This is the part that matters for a piece about career paths. A child doesn’t need to be told “you’re not the science type.” They only need enough failure experiences, explained to themselves in a particular way, to quietly stop choosing science. Not because they can’t do it, but because the risk of confirming what they already suspect about themselves feels too high.

The emotional layer: why the next failure feels unbearable

Sitting on top of that cognitive pattern is something more visceral, increasingly discussed under the term Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). RSD can be described as an intense wave of emotional pain triggered by real or perceived criticism or failure, discussed particularly in relation to ADHD. It’s important to say clearly that RSD is not yet a formal clinical diagnosis, and the research base is still young and qualitative rather than large-scale. But what does exist, points in a consistent direction.

A 2026 qualitative study of rejection sensitivity in ADHD, found it significantly impacted participants’ wellbeing. That is, anxiousness, despair, and embarrassment. Because of this, their social functioning, career opportunities, and daily life were impaired. Participants described using masking to cope, which led to dissociation and withdrawal rather than resolution.

Other clinical writing on RSD describes the same pattern in plainer terms. When left unaddressed, it can quietly shape career choices over time, showing up as turning down visibility, staying quiet in meetings, and avoiding networking. All because the emotional risk of one more awkward or critical moment feels disproportionate to the reward.

Now put the two pieces together – a learned belief that failure reflects something fixed about you, plus a nervous system that experiences the next potential failure as genuinely painful. What you get is a very plausible account of why some neurodivergent adults gravitate toward paths that feel safe rather than paths that feel right – smaller ambitions, less visible roles, less risk of another public correction.

What it looks like in adult outcomes

This isn’t only a theory about feelings. It shows up in employment data, and it shows up in a way that undercuts the easy explanation that ND adults simply “can’t” do certain jobs.

Locally, research indicates that only about 49% of autistic adults followed up in longitudinal studies were in paid, sheltered, or voluntary employment or education, and that only around 20% are able to live fully independently as adults. Globally, unemployment among autistic adults remains high across very different economies with 27.3% in Australia, 29% in the UK, and 14% in the US and Canada. Additionally autistic adults who are employed are more likely to be underemployed and lower-paid than their neurotypical peers.

The detail that matters most for this article comes from a German study of autistic adults. Despite a strikingly high rate of formal qualification (the majority held university entrance-level qualifications, and a quarter held a Masters or diploma), nearly a third were found to be overeducated relative to their current role. These aren’t adults without capability. They’re adults whose qualifications outstrip the jobs they’ve ended up in. Something in the path between “capable” and “career” is diverting them downward, and a childhood spent learning that effort and correction go hand in hand is a very credible part of that story.

Where this leaves parents and educators

None of this is deterministic, and it isn’t a life sentence. The same research that maps the problem also points to the fix. Attribution retraining, whereby a child is deliberately helped to see failure as specific and changeable (“that approach didn’t work this time”) rather than global and fixed (“I’m bad at this”), has been shown to meaningfully shift persistence and self-concept. So does praising effort and strategy over innate ability, giving children safe, low-stakes opportunities to fail and try again, and perhaps most importantly, making sure the adults around a neurodivergent child understand why they’re struggling before they start correcting how.

The uncomfortable truth is that a neurodivergent child’s career, twenty years from now, is partly being decided today – not by their ability, but by how today’s error gets explained to them. That’s not a burden parents should carry alone. But it is, encouragingly, something that can be changed one piece of feedback at a time.
